The September issue of Astronomy Now features Jupiter and the impact region that appeared in July 2009. The column describes methods that can be used to create a graphite sketch of the planet and its moons.

Basic Media: Graphite on artist grade paper.
Suggested Materials:
  • White artist grade stock
    with pre-printed Jupiter template
  • HB and 2H graphite pencils
    (optionally 6B or Ebony pencil for background fill)
  • Artist’s chamois
  • Blending Stump
  • Erasing Shield
  • Vinyl Eraser
  • Kneaded Eraser (Putty Rubber)
  • Clipboard and portable light

  1. Excellent portrayal of the impact Jeremy. Unfortunately I have managed to setup my own observatory and equipment rather late for a similar sketch.
    Jupiter surface details fascinate me and I am always keen to grab more detail in my sketches. Can you guide me on how to do sectional sketches?
