Both NGC 185 and NGC 147 fit into the same low power 88 arc minute true field of view. Unfortunately, the fit was too tight to make for a decent view, so I’m presenting them separately as observed with the Pentax XW10. NGC 185 was fairly straightforward, moderately condensed and slightly elongated at a PA of about 30 degrees. It appeared to be about 7 arc minutes across with a yellow star marking the west end of the 120X, 35 arc minute wide field.

Sketch/DSS Photo Comparison of NGC 185

Subject

NGC 185

Other Desig.

UGC 396, MCG+08-02-010, PGC 2329, H II-707, h 35, GC 90, CGCG 550.009

Classification

Galaxy (E3 Pec)

Position*

Cassiopeia: [00 38 58.1 +48 20 27]

Size

11.7′ x 10.0′ (PA 35°)

Brightness*

9.3 vMag, 10.2 bMag, Surface Brightness=14.4

Date/Time

OCT 04, 2010, 12:30 PM MST
(OCT 04, 2010, 0730 UT)

Observing Loc.

Home – Flagstaff, Arizona, USA

Instrument

SkyQuest XT8 (8 inch f/5.9 Dobsonian)

Eyepieces/Mag.

Pentax XW10

Conditions

Clear, calm, humid, cool

Seeing

5/10 Pickering

Transparency

SQM 20.5 mag/arcsec2

*Sources

SIMBAD; DSS; NGC/IC Project

Sketch of NGC 185Click image for larger version.
